The Outer Worlds Beginner Guide: Builds, Companions and Choices That Matter

The Outer Worlds from Obsidian Entertainment is a first-person sci-fi RPG set in Halcyon, a colony run by corporations. It rewards role-playing and lets you talk, sneak or shoot your way through most problems. These tips will help you build a character that fits your style.

Attributes and Skills

Attributes are set at the start and shape your character’s strengths, while skills grow as you level. Skills are grouped, so early points raise several related skills at once. Once a group reaches a threshold, you invest in individual skills, which is when specialising pays off.

Build Ideas

  • Silver tongue: invest in Persuade, Lie and Intimidate to resolve quests through dialogue.
  • Gunslinger: focus on Handguns or Long Guns plus Tactical Time Dilation.
  • Science specialist: combine Science with science weapons for unusual combat options.

Dialogue Checks Are Powerful

Many quests can be completed or improved through conversation. Speech skills often unlock peaceful solutions, extra rewards or entirely different outcomes. Even a combat-focused character benefits from a few points in one dialogue skill.

Companions

You can recruit several companions, each with a personal quest and a combat ability. Bringing two along gives skill bonuses and special attacks. Their loyalty missions are some of the most memorable stories in the game.

Flaws

The game sometimes offers a flaw after you repeatedly suffer the same kind of damage or situation. Accepting one gives a permanent penalty in exchange for an extra perk point. Choose flaws that don’t conflict with your build.

Choices Shape Halcyon

Factions remember what you do. Helping one group can anger another, and some decisions change entire settlements. Save often and don’t be afraid to follow your character’s values.
