Don’t Starve Together Beginner Guide: How to Survive Your First Winter

Don’t Starve Together drops you and your friends into a strange, hostile wilderness with nothing but your hands and a short day cycle. Most new players don’t lose to monsters; they lose to the calendar. This guide focuses on the decisions that matter in your first season and sets you up to survive Winter.

Day 1–3: Gather Before You Build

Your opening days should be spent moving, not settling. Pick up every twig, cut grass and flint you see, and grab carrots and berries along the way. Craft an axe and a pickaxe early, then a torch before your first night. Darkness in Don’t Starve Together is lethal on its own, so never let dusk catch you without a light source.

  • Priority materials: twigs, cut grass, flint, logs, rocks and gold nuggets.
  • Early tools: axe, pickaxe, torch, then a backpack once you find a few pig skins or use grass.
  • Food: carrots, berries and seeds keep you going until you can cook.

Choosing a Base Location

A good base sits near several biomes at once: grasslands for food, forest for logs, rocky ground for stone and gold, and ideally a pig village or beefalo herd nearby. Once you have gold, build a Science Machine and then an Alchemy Engine so you can unlock farms, a Crock Pot and better gear.

Managing Hunger, Health and Sanity

The three meters interact. Eating raw or spoiled food drains sanity, while low sanity spawns shadow creatures that attack you. Cooking food on a campfire helps, but a Crock Pot is the real upgrade: simple recipes like meatballs give large amounts of hunger for very little meat. Pick flowers, wear a garland and sleep in a tent to recover sanity.

Preparing for Winter

Winter is the first real wall. Before it arrives you want warm clothing (a Winter Hat or Puffy Vest), a reliable heat source like a Thermal Stone, and a stockpile of food that doesn’t spoil quickly. An Ice Box helps extend food life. Keep fires fuelled at base and plan short trips rather than long expeditions.

Playing as a Team

In multiplayer, split jobs: one player cooks and farms, one gathers, one explores and fights. Share resources in chests and avoid duplicating crafts. A ghost can be revived with a Telltale Heart or Touch Stone, so keep spare resources for emergencies.

Final Tips

Pause before every major decision and ask what the next season needs. Survival in Don’t Starve Together is about planning a few days ahead. Follow more Don’t Starve Together coverage on DEEP ATTACK.
